New videos showcase the impact of TVS Secure Data Environment

Kerrie Woods speaking in an interview video about the TVS Secure Data Environment

Thames Valley and Surrey Secure Data Environment (TVS SDE) has launched a new series of case study videos, developed with Telefónica Tech, highlighting how secure access to health and care data is transforming research and improving outcomes for patients. The videos were designed to tell the TVS SDE story from three perspectives: strategic, technical and real-world impact.

“It’s a first of its kind, but I think it’s the way of the future. It’s how to make this high-value research and development work for the NHS and work for its patients.”
— Kerrie Woods, TVS SDE Director

The first video explores why TVS SDE was created. Through the experiences of patients, researchers and NHS leaders, it shows the challenges caused by fragmented data systems and the need for a more joined-up approach to health research. It also highlights the partnerships that helped create the SDE and the opportunities it is creating for the future of healthcare.

The second video focuses on how the SDE was built. It explains the technical and governance challenges involved in bringing data together from multiple organisations while maintaining the highest standards of security, privacy and public trust. It highlights the collaborative approach taken by TVS SDE, Telefónica Tech and Starlight to develop a secure platform that enables researchers to access data safely and efficiently.

The final video demonstrates the impact the SDE is already having across research, healthcare and industry. Researchers describe how access to linked, de-identified data is helping answer important questions faster, support innovation and create new opportunities to improve patient care. Examples include work in cancer, mental health, dementia and lung disease, alongside collaborations that are helping deliver benefits for patients across the NHS.

Together, they show how TVS SDE is bringing organisations, researchers, clinicians and the public together around a shared goal: using health and care data safely and responsibly to improve lives. As the programme continues to grow, the videos provide a snapshot of what has already been achieved and the potential for even greater impact in the future.
